“The tragic history of Cambodian cinema is powerfully etched into this engrossing contemporary family drama.” – Variety

A lost film, buried beneath Cambodia’s killing fields, reveals different versions of the truth.

The Last Reel is a family drama telling a fictional story of a defiant protagonist, Sophoun, a young woman who is fighting to assert her independence in a family and culture still deeply mired in their conservative past.

While trying to escape from an arranged marriage, Sophoun hides in a crumbling movie theatre, where she discovers the remnant of a film, staring her very own mother, shot just after the fall of Phnom Penh in 1975.

The Last Reel brings a contemporary Khmer story about love, family and the ghosts of Cambodia’s past.

Special permission by the director Kulikar Sotho was granted to The Flicks for screening this movie as the last movie at The Flicks.
