The costumes, vocal talent and energetic production numbers are first-rate. Yet the story’s pile-on of horrors make for a discordant mix of the feel-good and the feel-worse.

This new version works well as a companion piece to the 1985 drama while, for the most part, standing alone as its own tear-jerking, exultant epic.
