Mykola and VasyA go in search of their father after they come to know that he is dying in Luxembourg, who left them when they were children. Kolya considers him a hero, while Vasya thinks he is a scoundrel.
This Ukrainian movie not only earns us the right to laugh during a period of suffering and conflict, it makes sharing in the warmth of its sweet-natured humor seem like a vital, revivifying act of resistance.
While the film is full of loopy humor, it has a sense of where it’s going far more than [its characters] ever could, perhaps exploring why absence makes the heart grow fonder but inevitably leaving one’s heart full.
